Waterloo region to implement light rail transit system by 2017

Council yet to decide private sector's level of involvement.

Kitchener Mayor Carl Zehr: This is a long-term vision of what our community needs to sustain itself.WATERLOO, ON, June 15, 2011: Jeff Outhit of The Record reports that the region of Waterloo has approved a rail transit plan that Council hopes will stimulate the economy by attracting business investment, save money on roads spending, and contribute to developing a sustainable community.

"In six years, expect to see trains on city streets, carrying passengers to work, home, and school.

In a historic decision, regional council voted 9-2 Wednesday to build an $818-million rail transit system, the largest public works project ever undertaken in the region..."
