New website strives to safeguard public good
Profiles barriers to public services and underlines democratic values.
OTTAWA, ON, April 20, 2011: The union that represents professionals working in the federal public service has launched a website and social media tools to underline the important work its members perform on behalf of all Canadians. Forthepublicgood.ca is dedicated to profiling the work of public service professionals and exposing the challenges and barriers they face as they strive to safeguard the public good.
"Forthepublicgood.ca will give our fellow citizens a better sense of the many achievements of Canada's public service professionals. It underlines the significance of values, such as independence and accountability, and the importance of knowledge and expertise," says Gary Corbett, President of the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada.
The public scientists, engineers, auditors, health, IT, and many other professionals who serve Canadians have faced mounting challenges, including underfunding of science and R&D, policy decisions driven by ideology rather than evidence, and rampant outsourcing of critical functions. Now, the federal budget presented on March 22 introduced a process that will lead to real cuts of up to 10 percent for federal government departments that have just absorbed a 5 percent budget reduction.
"This website's message is particularly critical as Canadians consider their vote on May 2nd," says Corbett. "I don't think it is too strong to say that the future of an independent and effective professional public service is at stake in this election and in the days that follow it."
