Edmonton rejects private snow removal
To purchase multi-use equipment instead.
EDMONTON, AB, March 17, 2011: The president of Canadion Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 30, the union representing Edmonton civic workers, is congratulating City Council for rejecting a motion to contract out snow removal services.
Council voted 9-4 today against a proposal by Mayor Stephen Mandel to examine the outsourcing of 20 percent of the city's snow removal. Instead, Council opted to purchase more snow removal equipment that can be used year round on other transportation projects.
"I'm glad that the majority of council listened to the submissions CUPE 30 made and opted to expand services in our city," said CUPE Local 30 President Terry Jardine.
"Council wisely recognized that snow removal wasn't enough this year and that we need to expand our efforts to better clear our streets."
