McGill University casual workers unionize
Collective agreement will provide better security and working conditions.
The Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) has 3,000 new members representing casual employees at McGill University in Montreal. They represent administrative, technical and maintenance workers.
In a labour board supervised vote, these non-academic workers, more than a fifth of the university's total work force, voted 85% in favour of joining PSAC.
"Protected by a collective agreement, those workers, although casuals, will be able to aspire to a greater security and better working conditions, which will relieve some of the stress caused by their precarious status," said Jerome Turcq, PSAC Quebec regional executive vice-president.
