Port Moody dumps privatized garbage collection

Contracted-out service called "embarassing" by mayor, pledges city will do the job right.

Acting Mayor Meghan Lahti brought garbage back under city controlThe City of Port Moody plans to take care of its own trash and dump its current garbage contractor.

Acting mayor Meghan Lahti announced Tuesday the city plans to buy its own garbage truck and return the responsibility of garbage collection and recycling services to city employees starting in July 2009, when the contract with a private company ends.

"Over the next few months, the city will put together a plan to provide better collection service for Port Moody residents," she said...
