Mass privatization announced in Ukraine

Only vital assets to stay under government control.

Yanukovych: Only assets ensuring national, economic security should remain in government possession.September 6, 2011: Ukraine is yet another nation that intends to privatize the vast majority of its assets in the name of austerity, writes Grigory Vasilenko for RIA Novosti. It has dismantled its gas monopoly and invited Russia as a partner in one of the three new firms.

"Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has announced a sweeping privatization scheme as part of efforts to plug the country's budget deficit.

'Only a limited number of assets ensuring the national and economic security should remain in government possession,' Yanukovych said, speaking to parliament on Tuesday. 'Other objects will be put up for sale...'"
